Going Deep
The Long Traditional Story Festival
Sponsored by Scheherazade's Legacy
August 24-27, 2006
Bethlehem, Indiana, on the beautiful Ohio River

Are you hungry for depth, substance, and a rich, filling storytelling experience? Long traditional stories are the equivalent of a hearty feast in a fast-food world. During Going Deep three epic tellers will place a great story banquet before you. Each evening you will hear one long story. The morning following each story, you will have the opportunity to "go deep" and further explore the story's themes, symbols, and meanings with the teller. Featured stories and tellers will include:

The Story of the Grail, told by Liz Warren - The Story of the Grail has captivated people for hundreds of years. With its roots in the Celtic oral tradition of heroes and magical cauldrons, the story emerged in 12th century Europe at a time of great cultural, technological and spiritual change - a time not unlike our own. Scheduled for Thursday night, August 24 at 7:00 p.m.

The Aztec Creation, told by Olga Loya - amongst the beating drums and the sounds of rattles, listen to stories of the Aztec Creation of the world - the sun and moon, death, music, corn, as well as stories of lust, envy and a most incredible birth. Scheduled for Friday night, August 25 at 7:00 p.m.

Tristan and Iseult, told by Priscilla Howe - Tristan and Iseult is a Medieval classic. It is a story filled with good luck, bad choices, reconciliation, betrayal, giants, dragons, fools and of course, Romance. What more could we ask? Scheduled for Saturday night, August 26 at 7:00 p.m.

This intimate festival will be held at
Storytellers' Riverhouse B&B

Featured Tellers:

Since 1988, Priscilla Howe has been telling the stories she loves to listeners around the US and in Europe. She's as comfortable telling "Tristan and Iseult" to the kids at the juvenile detention center as she is performing funny-scary stories for preschoolers or personal stories to elders. A native New Englander, she now lives in Lawrence Kansas.

Olga Loya was captivated by the vivid stories her Mexican grandmother and father would tell. Her stories are an impassioned quest to keep alive not only the fabric of her family but the larger Latino culture, richly robed in folktales, ancient myths and history. She tells personal tales, stories inspired by a mix of newspaper and dream, healing stories, tales of extraordinary women, and magical myths. She lives in San Jose, California.

Liz Warren, a fourth-generation Arizonan, is a storyteller, teacher, labyrinth builder and co-founder of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. She tells stories of growing up in Arizona, folktales, and myths from ancient traditions. Her recorded version of The Story of the Grail received a Parents Choice Recommended award in 2004.

Festival participants will be housed at the Storyteller's Riverhouse B&B in Bethlehem, Indiana. The fees are $400 if received before July 25, 2006 and $450 after that date.
